I took a couple days off work to give myself a long weekend and put the finishing touches on the 944. When I finally was able to fire it up it seemed to be having lots of trouble, like it was trying, but couldn't quite get there. When it started to catch one time it spat a lot (I do mean A LOT) of water out of the exhaust pipe. Not good.

Checked for proper spark. Good. Checked for fuel pressure on the rail. Good. Timing is still in the right spot. Good.

So what the hell is going on? I couldn't believe the head gasket wasn't put on right and water was just pouring into the combustion chamber. Pulled a spark plug and peered in. A little fuel. No water. Hmmm.

I felt a little heat from the motor, so it was firing, but on closer inspection I realized that of the two Ys for the header, only the 1 & 4 piece was warm. The header connected to 2 and 3 was cold. So what was going on with 2 and 3? Oh, I'm a complete moron and swapped the ignition leads for 2 and 3 (they're practically the same length). After that, it fired right up and spat out a bit more water.

My guess on the water is that it's been sitting in the exhaust pipe for the last year after the catastrophic failure of the head gasket at Cal Speedway. So I might have a big rusty spot inside my exhaust now. Sweet.

Bad news: this little puddle has formed on the ground. There's a leak coming from behind the belt cover, which I'm guessing is the water pump. Awesome. Need to get that sorted before I take it to the dyno and make sure I clearned up the fuel issue that caused the last motor to blow.

I'm on my third motor in 5 years, so I'm not a good person to ask about 944 ownership, though this is a race car and beat up much harder than a street car.

That being said, it's a great handling car, and as far as race cars go, pretty cheap to run. Bought this car with a busted half shaft for $1000. The first motor lasted me about a season and a half with just an oil change. Then I was bit by a common problem, the #2 rod bearing failure.

If it's just a road car, keep it topped up on oil and you should be fine.
